Recombinant TSH (Thyrogen®) for ablation of thyroid remnant tissue post-thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer

ثبت نشده
چکیده

• I ablation of remnant thyroid tissue following a total or near-total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer is carried out in the hypothyroid state to increase endogenous TSH release and thus promote uptake of radioodine into the remaining thyroid tissue. Usually thyroid replacement therapy has to be withheld from patients for 3 to 6 weeks before ablation in order to achieve an adequate TSH level. This can have a profound negative effect on the patient’s quality of life.

Recombinant human thyroid stimulating hormone in 2008: focus on thyroid cancer management

Radioiodine (RAI) ablation following thyroidectomy is standard of care treatment for patients with intermediate or high risk differentiated thyroid cancer. Traditionally, this has been achieved by forgoing thyroid hormone replacement postoperatively, allowing endogenous thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels to rise. This rise in TSH provides the stimulus for RAI uptake by the thyroid remnant...

Thyroid hormone replacement one day before 131I therapy in patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer

Objective: The current study aimed to determine the efficacy of radioiodine-131 (131I) ablation therapy with thyroid hormone replacement one day before 131I administration in patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Methods: This retrospective study included 29 patients who underwent 131I therapies twice for DTC during 6-12 months.  Since all the patients obviously had residual l...

Recombinant human TSH: the Argentinean experience.

With great interest we read the editorial ‘‘Expanding Indications of Recombinant Human TSH (rhTSH) in Thyroid Cancer’’ (1), which considered the extensive worldwide clinical experience with rhTSH. It is a very interesting review; however, we would like to clarify several points regarding the use of rhTSH in Argentina. Thyrogen has been used in Argentina for 7 years, and we have published and pr...

Can Thyrogen-Stimulated FDG-PET Detect Early Recurrence of Thyroid Cancer? Does Recombinant Human Thyrotropin-Stimulated Positron Emission Tomography With [18F] Fluoro-2-Deoxy-d-Glucose Improve Detection of Recurrence of Well-Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma in Patients With Low Serum Thyroglobulin?

Background: When whole-body scintigraphy (WBS) is negative despite elevated serum thyroglobulin (Tg) levels, the value of FDG-PET in the diagnosis of recurrent and metastatic thyroid cancer is well documented. An experimental study by Petrich and colleagues (2002) showed that thyrotropin (TSH) levels >0.3 μg/L with equivocal or negative WBS showed an increased level of FDG uptake after recombin...

Is Very High Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Level Required in Differentiated Thyroid Cancer for Ablation Success?

OBJECTIVE Remnant ablation with radioactive iodine (I-131) is a successful form of treatment that aims to destroy the remaining residual tissue and/or metastatic tissue after total thyroidectomy in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients. High level of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) (≥30 mIU/L) is recommended for success of ablation treatment. In this retrospective study, our aim was to...
